Scuba Diving on Palawan

2/22/95

Kurt, Lani and I took Ike's tricycle to Island Divers dive shop. From there we took another tricycle to a restaurant. We departed for the reef from a large banka (outrigger boat) moored on a near-by dock. The crew had trouble getting the boat started. They finally had to send for a new belt of some sort. The belt arrived by tricycle and we got underway about an hour behind schedule.

The water was rough and the diving relatively uneventful. On the first dive we went down to 120 feet. This was the deepest I have ever been. This broke my old record of 110 feet off Key West, Florida. My waterproof watch which has withstood shallower depths imploded and was destroyed by the salt water. Lani stayed on the banka with the two guides. The sea was very rough.

I started feeling poorly and opted not to do the second dive. Kurt and our diver master came back with an interesting story about seeing a very rare fish (frog fish) that the dive master has only seen three or four times in the area.

We returned around 12:30 and had lunch in the restaurant (this was associated with the Island Divers, and I cannot remember its name) overlooking the sea. This was a very picturesque location with the restaurant sitting on pillars over the water. We had a good lunch watching the water rise as the tide crept in.

Before we went to the Philippines in early 1995 there were no web sites devoted to providing info on diving in the Philippines. Now there are a bunch... be sure and check them out before you go!
