Everyone seems a little scared of Manila. We had numerous warnings about being out after dark or walking down poorly lit streets. Wearing jewelry or carrying cameras was also not recommended at night.

Other than all these precautions, Manila seemed like a very safe and friendly place. Security in Manila was highly visible. There were few if any police visible but armed security guards were everywhere. Many of the banks, hotels and restaurants had armed guards. In fact, almost every major business had a guard on the street to greet customers as they entered. Even Jolly Bee's hamburger chain, which is similar to McDonalds, had two guards with shotguns to open the doors for patrons as they entered.

Outside of Manila there seemed to be no sign of any type of security personnel. There was apparently little need for them because crime was a bit of a rarity outside Manila.
