As much as I would like to make this document the final word in travel in the Philippines, it will never come close. Also, in many of the remote areas you would have a little trouble finding a phone to plug your laptop into the World Wide Web.
Don't even think about leaving the airport without a good travel guide you can hold in your hand every step of the way. We used the most popular guide on the market, "The Lonely Planet". Whenever two American or European tourists bumped into each other while walking in the Philippines, it is because they both had their noses in The Lonely Planet and were not watching where they were going. Everyone has this book, and for good reason. It has detailed information about a lot of things. Exact directions are given on how to get from place to place, how much it should cost to get there, and where to stay and eat once you have arrived.
The only area in which The Lonely Planet was shallow is in providing detailed color descriptions of the locations it mentioned. There were a couple of specific instances were the information presented in The Lonely Planet did not provide us with enough information to properly dress, pack or plan for what to expect for a particular activity. These instances are clearly noted in the following text. It is my hope that this document will fill in some of the blank spots we found in The Lonely Planet and provide valuable information travelers can use to make intelligent travel decisions.
